Plant of the month: Acerola (Malpighia emarginata)

Acerola cherries (Malpighia emarginata) are small, red fruits that are a veritable treasure trove of nutrients, particularly vitamin C.  In fact, it is a real vitamin C powerhouse: it contains up to 30 to 40 times more vitamin C than an orange! This vitamin is essential for the immune system, collagen production (important for skin, bones and joints), and the absorption of iron. But the story of acerola doesn’t stop at vitamin C.  These tropical berries contain many other valuable components:

– Polyphenols: These antioxidants help protect against the daily onslaught of free radicals, which can cause cellular ageing and disease.

– Anthocyanins: This group of polyphenols gives acerola its vibrant red colour and contributes to its anti-inflammatory and protective properties. They are associated with various health benefits, including improved heart health and protection against neurodegenerative diseases.

– Other vitamins and minerals: As well as vitamin C, acerola also contains smaller amounts of other vitamins, such as vitamin A and B vitamins, and minerals such as potassium. These nutrients contribute to overall health.

Why do we like to use acerola in supplements? The combination of its high concentration of vitamin C and the presence of various other antioxidants and nutrients makes acerola a true all-rounder and therefore a popular ingredient, particularly for enhancing vitamin C formulations.
