For those familiar with DuSart Pharma, the name ‘Grandad DuSart’ is no stranger. He is often mentioned during introductory meetings with job applicants, as well as with potential partners, when explaining the origins of DuSart Pharma. We then recount his journey to Asia and how the idea for DuSart came about. Although Grandad DuSart has been retired for some time, his passion still permeates our office every day. Today, we’d like to introduce Grandad DuSart to everyone, via a trip down memory lane!
It was the post-war period, the year 1950, when Johannes Du Sart was a young man of 25. He had planned a special trip to Asia to search for new herbs. Little did he know that, due to an unexpected stopover, he would almost literally stumble upon the ginseng root, an encounter that would shape the rest of his life. Grandad bumped into a herbalist at a local herb market, who told him about the magical ginseng root. After making arrangements to have a few kilos sent to the Netherlands, he continued his journey. On his return, Grandad DuSart set to work, applying the knowledge the herbalist had shared with him, alongside the knowledge he’d gained during his medical studies.

Grandad created a Ginseng Tonic containing 40 herbs, based on medicinal white wine. This tonic was sold in bulk and in 500 ml glass bottles. Following this resounding success, demand for other products became a reality, leading to the establishment of the firm D.S. Pharma and the start of production of other supplements. The Ginseng Tonic with the gold label remained a bestseller for a long time, but was soon overtaken by other products and successes. At the start of this century, the company’s name was changed to DuSart Pharma bv to ensure a name that was easier to pronounce internationally. Today, we manufacture around 2,000 different products in solid and liquid form.
A success story like many others, but one with core values that still form the basis of DuSart Pharma’s way of working today: from idea to product, with dedicated service. Make the impossible possible and push the boundaries!
Grandad DuSart is no longer actively involved with DuSart Pharma, although at 97 years of age he is certainly still spry enough to be. However, he still pops round regularly for a cup of coffee and a chat. And so he is still referred to by this name when people are introduced to the company, and he can be seen on our website (in the chat function, for example), because without that one trip to Asia and that one stopover, DuSart Pharma would not exist today.
